Here is the step by step approach to persuading people that I promised! I use this formula when designing sales pages for companies, helping people communicate concern with loved ones, and any other time you’re trying to convince someone of anything.
Once you wrap your head around it, you’ll start using it all over the place!
First, you have to tell people what the problem is. Without getting the other person on the same page, nothing else can move forward.
Most people are motivated, mainly, by fear of pain and here’s where you use that to your advantage. Explain all the ways the problem is negatively impacting them.
This is really where your powers of influence come into play. A lot of people don’t see anything wrong with how they’re doing things, even though they’re creating massive problems in their life.
Now that you’ve used every Jedi mind trick in the book to help them understand the problem, it’s time to give them a solution.
Go point-by-point and outline how what you’re proposing will make a difference.
You’ve told them what the problem is, explained why it’s an issue, told them what the solution is & why it’ll make a difference. Now what?
Don’t leave them hanging! Tell them exactly what to do next. The next step might seem perfectly obvious to you, but to someone who doesn’t know the issues as well as you might be completely lost, so guide them to the next step in the process.
It might read clunky at first, but in real life this whole process can happen in a couple sentences.
“Hey man, your anger issues (Problem) mean the people you love are scared of you (Negative impact). Have you thought about trying yoga? (Solution) I hear it helps you stay centered and manage your emotions in a way that helps you relate more honestly to the people you love. (Why the solution works) Check out this schedule of free yoga classes available this week. (Call to Action)”
This is a silly example I just came up with, but you see how it can work in your day-to-day interactions. Make sure to use those magic words in your communication to maximize your persuasive powers!
I’d love to know how you’re using this formula in your life. Please drop me note letting me know what kind of success you’re having with it.
Remember: Use your new-found skills for GOOD!
