“What did we think was universal, but really turned out to be a fad?
This is an incredible video that outlines how Google’s Material Design came into existence, and the issues the designers were trying to address through the whole process.
As you watch this video, pay attention to the level of detail the designers are exploring, and how thorough their process is. Take a look at the lighting rig they construct and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Also, keep in mind the 10 principles of good design, and you’ll see them through the whole video. Further, look for the 7 steps of the design process, and they will stand out. Take the quote pulled from the video at the top of this post. That’s Step 7: Revise & Repeat.
This site is built on the idea that design is universally applicable, and once you start seeing the parallels of working on Material Design and working on your life, I think you’ll discover how important it is to know this stuff inside out.
Think about how much introspection and self analysis you’ve done as compared to how much these designers think about Material Design. If it’s not nearly as much as they put into Material Design, I’d say you have some work to do.
Sure, Material Design is important, but you life is the most important project you’ll ever work on. Make choices that reflect it.
