IT MAXIMIZES FREEDOM
Welcome to A Life Well Designed Video
In this video we’re going to talk about the tenth principle which is. . .
Good design maximizes freedom.
In life we don’t have complete free will, but we do have limited options. Good design will help create options instead of limiting them.
Consider life before the smart phone: you had to be at your desk to use the tools required for business.
Along comes the smart phone, and suddenly it provided the functionality of everything you rely on. It combines your calendar, note pad, phone book, file cabinet, and then goes even farther with a multimedia production studio complete with video and audio recording abilities, plus it replaces the functionality of stereos and radios, AND it replaces the atlas and gps device used for navigating. on and on it goes.
This one device creates an incredible number of options that uncouples your ability to create value from a specific place and time. That is the very definition of freedom.
Think of it this way.
Here is your life. At this moment, you have a variety of options you can choose right now. Each choice either creates more options or fewer options.
A life well designed maximizes the number of choices you have available to you; while a life without a plan will back you into a situation with few choices open to you.
Make choices that maximize freedom, not limiting it instead.
And that’s the tenth principle of good design.
